Young Writers' Conference

By Matthew Whittle

The Young Writers' Conference is coming up! The Young Writers' Conference is for students to write books, illustrate them, then take them home for their families to see and read.

Some of the classes have already started their Young Writers' Conference books. The Young Writers' Conference takes place during a whole week. There are many activities to participate in, such as; dress up as your favorite character, make an origami book, share your books, and more!

Once the Young Writers' Conference is going on, the Imagination Machine comes to the school. If you're lucky, the Imagination Machine may choose your book to be acted out on stage.

SMASH MOUTH'S

WALKING ON THE SUN

By Danielle Fiori & Lindsay Olsen

Not quite 25 years ago , but about 6 years ago, "Walking On The Sun" was written and almost not recorded.

The song was written by guitarist/ song writer, Greg Camp. The song was rejected by a previous band and had been collecting dust on the top shelf of Camp's closet.

Who would have guessed.... that one of the #1 Pop rock songs was inspired by a trudged! He wrote it when he was in another band which hated the ode to the 60's idealism inspired by the L.A. riots. NOW IT'S A HIT!

Drug Free Week

By Eric Dewey

Starting off the week, we had an assembly with the M.V.H.S. Nighthawk Cheerleaders, Football, Volleyball, Drama, Dance, The Jazz Band, and Basketball teams. This assembly proved to be a great motivator to all our students!

A great job was done by the students that had great slogans, essays, poems, and special things everyone did for the challenge of thinking up good essays. Congratulations to Brandon Wolfe and Cody von Muegge in Mrs. Keller's class. They had their essay and poem published in the Californian.

Congratulations to all the red ribbon winners. Remember to always stay drug free. Never throw away those ribbons!

What's Fine, In Fine Arts ?

By Lyndsay Olsen & Danielle Fiori

Two years ago, Marty Corn came up with an idea and brought it to Ms. Norton and Ms. Daniels, the original Fine Arts' teachers. Her idea was to paint a mural on a school wall with 5th grade Fine Arts' students. The teachers said yes, then they approved it with the principal. Towards the end of the year they started the mural Starry, Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. It was a success!

Just last year, Mrs. Hernandez and Mrs. Paysee, with all other Fine Arts' teachers, decided they wanted to do it again. So they chose The Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso. They wanted to do something that was pleasing to the eye and interesting to look at. The mural is by the girls bathroom and the janitors' closet.

We took a survey with 4th & 5th graders. We asked, "Are you looking forward to painting the next mural?" Here are our results:

YES 4th- 5% 5th- 7%

NO 4th- 5% 5th- 0%

So that means More Murals, More Murals !!

MOVIE REVIEW: Titanic

By Melissa Ricketts

It was a very good movie, 2 thumbs up, 10 stars, excellent!! That is what most people rated it (at our school). It has a lot of romance, a lot of action, and dying. It is rated PG 13 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslete. Titanic is about a lady who is in her 100's, telling her story about the unsinkable Titanic. If you like action and excitement, this is a movie you want to see!

OLDIES, BUT GOODIES

(In Teaching)

By Katie Pickrahn, Alex Young, Christine Enfield

After looking in old yearbooks, we found some teachers who have been here (at Murrieta Elementary) for quite awhile. Two of them are, Ms. Quinlan and Mrs. Ellsworth.

Ms. Quinlan has been here for 20 years. She came to this school because she wanted to teach 2nd grade and at the time, Murrieta Elementary was the only opening!

Mrs. Ellsworth has been here for 10 years. She taught 9 of those years in kindergarten. Mrs. Ellsworth likes this school a lot. She says it is fun to be around.

Of all the students, teachers, staff and parents we happen to talk to about these two particular teachers, we must say, we all feel pretty lucky to have them with us!!

That's My Candy!

By Christine Enfield and Katie Pickrahn

As it seems around Murrieta Elementary School, chocolate is the number one favorite amongst the people we interviewed. If you look at the graph below, you will find that chocolate took 1st place among the choices of favorite Valentine candies (with a total of 16 votes). Candy hearts came in 2nd place with total of 11 votes. Sweethearts took 3rd place as one of the favorites, with a total of 9 votes. Lollipops had 8 votes. Redhots had only 3 votes, along with the other candies in the miscellaneous category. All in all, out of the 50 people we spoke with, not one mentioned a dislike of candy. We guess it's going to be a pretty "sweet" holiday!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

D.A.R.E. STARTS

For 5th Graders

By James Valdez

The D.A.R.E. program (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) is for all fifth to seventh grade students. The MPD (Murrieta Police Department) provides this program for the Murrieta Unified School District (Murrieta, E. Hale Curran, Tovashal, Avaxat, Rail Ranch, and Alta Murrieta). Here at MES, Officer Dennis Vrooman is in charge of teaching the D.A.R.E. program to our 5th graders.

On our first day of D.A.R.E., which began on Thursday, Feb. 5th, Officer Vrooman showed a 15 minute movie about drugs. He taught us about the meaning and rules of D.A.R.E. At lunch, Officer Vrooman was available to answer any questions students had about D.A.R.E. He even showed his utility belt! Officer Vrooman talks to you about D.A.R.E. and explains that drugs are not cool to do.

Officer Vrooman comes every Thursday. "D.A.R.E. is for fifth graders just like you," quotes Officer Vrooman. The D.A.R.E. program is like going to school. Drugs are like not going to school or even flunking! Drugs don't make you cool, they get you high. Officer Vrooman talks about the depressants (drugs that slow you down) and the high drugs (marijuana, cocaine, pot, speed, etc.). Drugs eventually will kill you. Officer Vrooman mentions how there will be times when someone will try to get you to try drugs. Our answer? Just say NO!!
